Plant Management

This case study explores the introduction of a new module, Plant Management, into the existing Transport Management Software Tracknet. The primary goal was to enhance user experience and provide additional functionality to meet evolving user needs.

01

Overview

Managing logistics in a production plant poses challenges such as inadequate vehicle visibility, extended turnaround times, and inside and outside plant issues. Insufficient real-time tracking of vehicles can lead to disruptions, while inefficient loading-unloading processes impact turnaround times.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach, integrating technology, optimizing processes, and fostering effective communication to ensure efficient and timely movement of materials within and outside the production plant.

02

Key Challenges

  • Extended Plant Turnaround Times (TATs) causing delivery delays.

  • Inadequate visibility of vehicles for loading and unloading both inside and outside the plant.

  • Limited insight into stage-wise vehicle activity inside the plant leading to traffic congestion and inefficient production capacity utilization.

  • Absence of visibility regarding incoming vehicles, hindering proactive planning.

Our Solution

In response to the evolving requirements of our users, we introduced an "Automated Plant Traffic Congestion and Tracking System, named as PLANT MANAGEMENT", to enhance our existing software through the integration of this new module design. The new module seamlessly integrated with the existing software architecture, ensuring a cohesive and user-friendly experience

  • Provided comprehensive insights into stage-wise vehicle activity inside the plant

  • Identified SLA breach vehicles both inside and outside the plant

  • Offered real-time overviews of traffic for different material types inside and outside the plant

  • Established a system with real-time alerts for detecting route deviations and unplanned stoppages in red zone

  • Implemented proactive notifications for incoming vehicles to the plant that enabled advanced planning for dedicated vehicles

Approach

After a few brainstorming sessions, we came up with an idea to divide the module into two parts - Plant Workflow & Plant Overview (Discussed Below)

On the right side is an image of a flow we created on Figjam!

Sub Modules

Let's take a quick look at both the submodules, their Designs, and Features!

Color Theme:  We were given an Excel sheet by the client that indicated certain shades they use to define each category, so here we designed it accordingly to make it easier for their employees to adapt.

I designed this sub-module keeping in mind the stages Inside and Outside the plant.

Shades of Green and Purple indicate areas with no processing unit and processing units respectively.

Arrows are given to show the flow each vehicle follows from Gate In to Gate Out.

This module provides real time map view of the whole plant.

Different colors are provided to each category to maintain ease

Vehicle Icons are designed to show if it's empty or loaded.
